Little late to review The Kite Runner but yeah… let’s do it.
It’s been more than a year since I read the book and still the memory feels fresh. The characters, the lines, the heartbreak… it just doesn’t leave your mind.
I genuinely don’t think I’ll ever forget how this book made me feel.
I was attending my district residency programme during that time and had to travel by train every day. That train journey became my reading time. And because I hadn’t properly read books for almost a year before that, I suddenly got back into reading heavily.
I was finishing books at the pace of 2–3 books a week.
Then I picked up The Kite Runner. And that pace immediately hit brakes.
I had to take breaks after chapters. Sometimes after just a few pages. Sometimes after a single scene.
Because I needed time to sit with what I had just read.
I was so emotionally overwhelmed reading it. And yes… I cried a few times too.
It had been a long time since a book affected me like that emotionally.
And the strange thing is – it’s been a year now and I still remember the feeling. That heaviness. Those characters. That ache the story leaves behind.
Some books you finish and move on from. Some books become a part of you.
This book definitely became one of those for me.
I’m supposed to read A Thousand Splendid Suns next and honestly… I still don’t think I’m mentally ready for it yet 😭
Because I already know it’s going to emotionally destroy me again.
So I’m waiting. Taking my time before stepping into another intense story like that.
And I think that itself says something about Khaled Hosseini’s writing.
When a book still lives inside you after a year… that’s no longer just a story you read.
It becomes an experience you carry.
