Being kind has become such a rare thing now that whenever it happens, it becomes news. Social media picks it up, people share it everywhere, and it gets labelled as an “act of kindness.”
But shouldn’t kindness be normal?
Imagine if every person decided to do just one small act of kindness every day. Nothing dramatic. Nothing that ends up going viral.
Just simple things.
Holding the door for someone whose hands are full. Saying “thank you” to the person who served your coffee. Being polite to your driver. Tipping a little extra when someone has done a good job.
Or sometimes just being patient with someone who made a mistake.
Because the truth is, we all mess up. Every single one of us. And just because someone made a mistake doesn’t mean they deserve humiliation instead of kindness.
I think one thing adulthood teaches us is that everybody is carrying something we know nothing about.
The rude cashier.
The distracted waiter.
The colleague who snapped at you.
Maybe they are just having a terrible day.
And honestly, we all have those days. But having a bad day doesn’t automatically give us permission to spread that bad day to everyone around us.
One thing I deeply admire is people who remain kind even when life isn’t being kind to them. That takes strength.
And contrary to what many people think, kindness isn’t weakness. Sometimes it takes far more strength to stay gentle than to react with anger.
And Kindness can be the most unexpected response to someone being mean. It catches people off guard. Sometimes it even makes them reflect on their own behaviour.
And finally, the hardest one of all. Be kind to yourself. Most of us are far harsher on ourselves than we would ever be on another person.
You deserve the same patience, grace, and understanding that you so easily offer to others.
“The world probably doesn’t need more extraordinary people. It just needs more ordinary people choosing kindness every day.”
